Adventures in Cooking … With Color!

This last weekend we celebrated Nick’s birthday! Last year, on his birthday, I baked him jalapeno cheese grits. This year I continued that little tradition and added another detail. A Dalek cake!

The best part of this cake? The chocolate icing? The fact that I didn’t destroy it while baking?

Or the colorful inside?

I wanted Nick to be surprised when he cut his piece. The cake wasn’t just tasty, it was fancy!

First of all, I started with our own fresh eggs from the lovely ladies in the backyard. I also bought cake mix, the icing, and food coloring. Since it is super close to Easter, the choices for food coloring were all Easter themed. Luckily, Nick just loves anything colorful.

I prepared the batter as described on the box, then I separated it and used food coloring to get four brightly colored sections. Next, I just poured a little bit at a time, allowing the batter to spread each colorful section beneath it. Great news here, you can be as messy as you want, or are naturally. The messier your pour, the more wacky the cake will be. Just don’t stir it all together. It would lose the different colors.

I went with a French Vanilla flavor because the cake without altering would be white, so the color added would pop easily. I love how it turned out once it was all finished. I’m craving it just typing this up and looking at the pictures again. Yikes!

Nerds of DFW Unite

I consider myself a nerd. This means I get super excited about things I like and can geek out about them. So, as a right of passage into Nerdom, Nick and I took the plunge into the world of the Sci Fi Expo. I had been to a small Sci Fi Expo in Plano as a kid. There were mostly Star Wars and Star Trek fans. It’s amazing to see how all encompassing, accepting, and awesome the Nerdom has become. Any fandom was accepted, loved on, and exclaimed about.

One of my favorite parts of the day were the costumes. There was a good number, and they were very well done. Just to list a few: Nazgul, Arwen, a Hobbit, Harley Quinn, Darth Vader, Storm Troopers, an Imperial Guard, Adventure Time characters, Jay and Silent Bob, tons of Doctor Who, a handful of steampunk, the Monks from the Holy Grail movie, Rogue, Gambit, and tons of others that I sadly did not recognize.

At first, I felt very out of my comfort zone. I’m not sure why. Maybe I felt that I wasn’t nerdy enough for such awesomeness. It might have been taking my picture with the most realistic storm trooper outfit I have ever seen. It was a bit intimidating. There were comments when Nick got his picture with the guy. Mostly about how tall Nick is. I tend to forget what a tall guy he is. I just think I’m shorter than average sometimes.

The booths were very interesting and we walked through them twice. There were old school comic books, vintage action figures, amazing figurines, costumes, old school video games, patches, and amazing current illustrators. We even saw a life size Dalek that moved around.

Nick was trying to help me get into the groove, but the moment that busted me out of my slump was when I decided to take a picture with the Jay and Silent Bob cosplayers. They were in perfect character and costume. I decided to throw aside the random shyness that had come over my and told them to pose with me, each giving me a kiss on the cheek. It was hilarious. The rest of the day was a blur of people watching, sitting in on the beginning of a very strange Q & A, seeing Lea Thompson from “Back to the Future” and finally, the highlight of the day, meeting Billy Boyd. He was kind, very kind. I don’t remember a whole lot of the moment, except that I was star struck. He is a hobbit and I was meeting him.

The first dive into true Nerdom culture was a success. I’m super excited for the next step, because I do believe that involves Nick and I wearing costumes to a Convention. We didn’t this time, but I think I will be ready for the next one.
